Hi ,

First time finding mites, they are in the house, seems to be lower level which is where I had momma duck and ducklings in December. They had a cage down there because of the cold. So any ideas on what to do , I have an exterminator that can come in. I prefer to do natural treatments, looking for best suggestions? Next, the coops have to be completely cleaned out and washed. I keep them clean but what should I use as a soap to get rid of these things? I see the Dichotomous earth is a thing. Ideas on best places on or off line to buy the DE? Here is a picture of a dead mite for reference. Huge thanks to all

I use diatomaceous earth food grade, but i hear if you do deep litter method not to use it. It kills the good bugs too .and wash with vinegar. Im from canada so i got my de at canadian tire. I imagine any store that sells layer feed would have it.

Permethrin 10 concentrate is very good to use and mix with water in a spray bottle or garden sprayer to treat facilities, nests, coop, roosts once a month, and it can be used on the duck every 7 days until mites are gone. Remove all bedding far away or burn it, and repalace with new. Permethrin garden dust is good for treating the ducks in cold weather, but the spray goes a lot farther. Read insert for mixing instructions which will vary from facilities to the ducks. Martins and Gordons are 2 common brands of the concentrate, about $8 for a pint, or they usually sell the ready to use spray at TSC.

Thank you, I am in North Carolina so not as cold as Canada. I will get to work on coop cleaning with vinegar and water, change all bedding and do the diatomaceous earth asap! Kinda stressed out over all of it, first time. The birds look good but will need to exterminate in house where the maternity duck ward was at and more! Thanks so much

Thank you so much!

Honestly, go with the permethrin. DE isn't going to get rid of mites. You are going to chase your tail and waste time and money. Even with permethrin, you will need to treat the birds and clean out and treat the coop at least three times at weekly intervals to get the ones that continue to hatch. With the more expensive elector PSP you can do less treatments, but it is quite a bit more expensive.
