I know that putting food grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) in the area that they dust bath, the nesting boxes, and floor of the coop helps to prevent mites and lice. Because it cuts their exo-skeleton and then dessicates them (kind of medieval, but whatever...)
The people at my feed store recommend oil (EVOO, Mineral, etc) on their legs for mites, and Sevin added to their dust bathes to help with infestations. Then once they are erradicated, start with the preventative stuff like DE.
