If you are already using Permethrin, I wouldn't go buy Sevin. They are both nerve agents, both act in the same way to kill the bugs.

I don't know if you're talking to me or Boggy, but I'll butt in anyway!

Yes, those precautions sound good; you're at an advantage, too, using Permethrin over Sevin b/c Sevin is more easily absorbed through the skin.

I agree with Boggy on this.

OH I agree Wisconsingardenchick,
Definitely follow the directions, obviously wash up afterwards, and such, this is a poison after all. But I use it all the time (Sevin Dust that is) I live on a pretty large farm, and all our animals since I was a child have always gotten Sevin dust baths (we havent always has spot on flea treatments). My point here, is it's a great product at doing it's job, Currently it's intended for putting on your gardens after all...Just dont want people to be terrified to use it, because you'd have to eat the bag to get sick off it, In my opinion!!LOL

Obviously please dont folks, but have used it for all kinds of creepy crawlies for 35 years now, and up till recently, it was 100% stronger than it is now and I get it all over me and have never gotten as much as a headache from it. As for WWII use, they are no where near that strong in todays over the counter garden use Sevin Dust.

But, you are right, again, take precautions when using any of these dust, you may be more susceptible to it that I am....
See ya

I have been following this thread from
day one, and have learned a little more each day.
I have used Sevin and a dust called permactrin,
but changed back to using Sevin alone.
to save some $$ and
due to an old time flockkeeper I met at our local TSC
telling me he had used it for years , with out using anything else.

Yep Sissy,
That's kind of how I started using it, except it was my Granddad who had me using it. Remember being just a little boy and dusting the heck out his cattle to keep the flies off their back in the summer...Lord, that was back in the 70's too...

Everybody's information is very helpful. I'm going with the Permethrin (which I already did last night). Used a little, just in their shavings, when they were about a week old and it seemed to work, but didn't realize you have to follow through with another treatment...guess that's why they are infested now. I will definitely follow through this time in a week! Don't know what I would do without BYC! What a great resource...thanks everybody.

I did use a dusting powder bought at the local co-op last year.
PermaCtrin.... what is the difference between this
and the Permethrin that others have used here.???
although I only use Sevin now.
