A few months ago I ordered 3 golden comet girls. It was great and the day they arrived we opened up the box to find four chicks. We were very surprised but we keep all four and we a adding a bigger run to the coop to make space for the extra chick. I was wondering if anyone else has had a surprise chick or any weird experiences happen with the hatchery.

Welcome to BYC!

I don't think it's unusual to get an extra chick or two from the hatcheries. That's one way they can get rid of some males and also when it's cooler weather, they'll include extras for warmth.

When we got a shipment from Murray McMurray last year and they threw in a White Crested Black Polish. We didn't mind so much that it was a roo but because of his top knot, he didn't fit in well with the others (they picked on his head feathers).

Whatever you ended up with, hope you're enjoying them!

Hello and Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined! Most hatcherys will some times add a free surprise chick (which almost always turns out to be rooster). I got a silver laced wyandotte rooster once, and t than a black rose comb rooster another time.

That isn't unusual. Even though it has never happened to me, I have heard of it happening before.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Adorable chicks! It isn't unusual for the hatchery to add an extra chick or two or what you have ordered, they often do this (if they have extra chicks) in case you lose one.
