Mixed breed chicks-good, bad or just unpredictable?

Mixed breeds can also be called 'hybrids', sexlinks are basically a mixed breed. It seems that with chickens the 'mutts' are the best birds overall, they tend to be better layers, they live longer, and they can be crazy colors.
An example of crosses laying better is my wyandotte bantams. We crossed a SL roo and a BLR hen, both lines are poor layers and the chicks from them are great layers.
