Mixed Breed Photo Reference *please read guidelines in first post before adding content*

I am surprised anyone even bothered answering back this rant.

They're just chickens, and they need loving too.

I've got a lovely looking batch of babies in the brooder right now but I will wait until they're older before I post pictures. I will say though that I have some BEAUTIFUL chicks from my previously posted Roo bred back to his Buff Wyandotte "mommas", They look like they're brindle with white lacing. I also have some chicks from him bred to my Black Olive Eggers, they're mostly Whites with Black/Blue speckles(and HUGE already). I love my little mongrels

Wow, I have never in my life seen some get so excited over CHICKENS. lol. I have several different types, some that I spent hundreds of dollars on (Cream legbars) and some I make "mutts" with (olive eggers). So whose up for making more "mutts" and seeing what we can come up with?!?!

I think, people can breed pure if they want and I'll certainly keep some of my flock pure, but crosses can be interesting and quite beautiful. I sort of worry a bit about keeping breeds TOO pure, because going back to the dog example, some breeds which have been kept really, really pure have too small a gene pool, have deformities and shorter lifespans. And coming away from the dog example, look at some royal families!

I don't have any grown chook photos yet, give me a month or two. Can I still post if I don't know which parent's which?

Hatcheries are mass producers and do not pay any attention to breed characteristics and traits.  .... Where I (and many others) have an issue with hatcheries is misrepresentation, not whether or not the birds they are selling are purebred or bred to the breed standard or not. 

Amen. And their breed descriptions on their websites don't match what they send you. For instance: Orpingtons. " Hens: 6-8 lbs." If I ever got a hatchery Orp that grew that big I'd think someone made a huge mistake. What they send you: at maturity, weighs about 3 1/2 lbs. Barred rocks: Same claim on size. What you get: A bird with a cuckoo, not barred, pattern that is even smaller at maturity. It's misrepresentation that is the monster.

Mix them match them do whatever you want with your birds. It's when people cross them and then sell as purebreds that hurts. Other than that. Who cares? We wouldn't be in this thread at all if we were so against crossing them anyway.


Now bring on the pictures I love them!

I would prefer to keep this thread just crosses of known parent breeds... the whole premise was so people who were wondering what a particular cross would look like could see what others had gotten... If you could at least make an educated guess as to what the parents are, that would be ok, though

wonder what mixed breeds i will get!

I would prefer to keep this thread just crosses of known parent breeds... the whole premise was so people who were wondering what a particular cross would look like could see what others had gotten... If you could at least make an educated guess as to what the parents are, that would be ok, though

I think Rachel meant that she was unsure of which of the two parent breeds was the roo, and which was the hen. (I may have misinterpreted though.)

yes, but the point of this thread isn't just to show any old mixed breed chicken... there is nothing wrong with mutts and mixed breeds, some of my favorite birds fall in that catagory, but there are plenty of other threads for that... the specific point of this thread was to provide people who want to know was a crossing of two specific breeds(Barred Rock x Buff Orpington, White Leghorn x RIR, etc), a point of reference as to what their crosses might turn out like

so I have an OEGB roo, some cochins, an EE, something weird we have no idea what she is but call her an EE cause she lays green eggs and an orpington

well pour roo aint bredding, but i want to see some combanations so...

anyone have these? doesnt have to be the specific color or gender, but those breeds, specific color if you can. We have an OEGB roo and i wanna see what his babies would look like

if you have ANY OEGB cross tho, that would be nice to see!
