New to the whole chicken lifestyle!
Went to our local Farm supply store to purchase our chicks. They had 4-5 different breeds available for several purposes. I bought Rhode Island Reds and Black and Buff Orpingtons. They seem to be doing just fine now, but will I have problems when they get older because of the different breeds? Can they live harmoniously in the same coop?

They will all get along fine. I've got a mixed flock of several different birds (there were so many beautiful ones I didn't want to pick!) and I've never had a problem between them other than ordinary pecking order issues. I like being able to tell them apart.... and you'll find after you have them for a while that even ones of the same breed will look slightly different to you or have different personalities so you can even identify them individually. Welcome to BYC and enjoy your chicken adventure- I predict you'll love it (and be hooked like the rest of us!)

Then the disease process begins.....you will find that you NEED this pretty breed and that pretty breed! Welcome! My broody hen just successfully hatched mutts...they are sooo pretty now and I cant wait to see how they grow up! By the way...I ate the eggs that would have been pure bred Buff Ops before I realized what was going on....DUH!

Thanks! Very curious to see how this all turns out. I have a seven year old daughter that apparently has her dad wrapped around her little finger enough to get these chicks! (Honestly kind of excited myself as well...LOL)

Yeah I don't know many people who don't have more than one breed! We have loads of different breeds in our pasture,we just keep the roos seperate in their own bachelor pad so there is no mixed breeding.
