Hey all!! I've been reading by advice for the past year am finally joining the conversation!
First things first, I'm looking for some help maybe.. I hatched duck eggs a few months ago and only had one successfully hatch (5 days early) after a week over due I opened all the eggs VERY carefully in the hopes that they were still alive. The wernt. 1 hatched, 23 fully formed but dead (we had a heat wave that week so I'm wondering if that messed them up). Well I've been incubating more eggs, duck again and yesterday morning one hatched!! Beautiful baby ducky happy as a clam. But now none of the other eggs have even pipped and I'm scared I will only have one hatch again. Last time we were able to track down a duckling to pair with it with only a week difference in age but I don't think we will this late in the year especially in our area (northwestern ontario). I don't know what to do!!!
Ok so now that that's out of the way, a bit about us. We bought 160 acres last year and had 5 turkeys. This summer we went from nothing to about 67 animals lol.
We have 21 Rhode island reds, 22 broilers, 11 orlop bronze turkeys, 3 Cayuga ducks, 2 Swedish blacks, 1 buff orphington(duck), 1 khaki Campbell and our newest addition appears to be a Rouen (I had it labeled Ancona but the markings look like rouen). The eggs im hatching currently (hopefully) are Rouen, Ancona and buff orphingtons. We also have 2 goats, 2 meat rabbits (females, looking for a male) a dog and a cat. Oh and a 4 year old and 7 month old LOL.
I've never farmed before lol... just jumped in! I don't think I mentioned we are doing this all while living in a 250 square foot trailer... even in the winter
