Mixing breeds?

They are living animals, nothing is definite. It is possible any breeds can mix and do fine. It is possible chickens of the same breed will not get along. Having lots of room really helps, whether they are the same breed or totally different. If you can tell us about your facilities and what you are considering we may be able to offer constructive advice or suggestions, but the answer to your question is maybe.

My flock of 17 consists of all different breeds. I do not have 2 of the same breed. It is obviously easier to start when they are all chicks, but each hen has their own temperament. I had to rehome my RIR and Barred rock, because they were too aggressive and started cannibalizing my sweet Brahma.
Each flock has its own dynamics due to the pecking order and genetic makeup of each chicken. Good luck with your flock!

I have 40 chickens and I have 8 different breeds but I have 4 -6 of each breed. That way no one is an oddball and gets picked on. I also bought all docile breeds but they are small like Sebright bantams and up to large like Jersey Giants.

I have 20 birds. Light brahma, GLWyandotte, EE, red and black sexlinks, RIR, some EE/wayandotte crosses, a wellsummer mix (suspected), Barred rocks, they tend to group by generation, not by breed. Individual personalities vary greatly. Some people have had issues with agressive RIR's, I never have. My worst bird ever was a light brahma roo, whose earned name was inappropriate for small children, he was indiscriminately nasty. For the most part, if you have enough space, they will be fine regardless of breed, taking into account individual personalities.

I agree with ridge runner. Having birds the same size I feel is important too.
