We are new to chickens and would like to start with a couple hens that are already laying, then get some baby chicks down the road to raise. We only have room for about 8 chickens, and we'd like to have a variety of breeds. Are there any particular breeds that don't get along well with others? Or don't accept younger or new chicks to the flock?

All chickens are individuals. Most are accepting of flock members they are familiar with, and new chick additions as long as there's enough room for everyone. When chickens are crowded, or confined too closely they can become more aggressive towards each other.

I personally would avoid game breeds, and crested breeds initially, as well as not mixing bantams and standards.

A mixed breed flock is nice. You can tell birds apart more easily, and thus keep an eye on everyone better.
