Mixing layers and meaties?

I am sooo new to this and have been scouring over BYC for hours with all the great information. We have a 6x8 shed that we are in the process of converting to house some chickens that we have not even purchased yet. We would like to have around 12-20 chickens, and would like to have a mixture of layers and meaties. Will they live okay together or do we need to separate them? Thank you so much for sharing your chickie info with me!
