Mixing my own feed?

I am also having feeding issues. I purchased 26 barred rocks and 4 ameraucanas this summer. I got all my info from my father and his farming friends thinking they should know--WRONG! they had me taking my chicks off starter feed at 6 weeks--and feeding straight corn until the hens started laying. only until recently did i question that. it just didn't seem right from the get go--i should have trusted myself better than them. anyways....now i'm off to a real feed store to purchase some high quality feed for my poor chickens. i'm finding something with 17% protein, 3% fat, and 1.1-1.2% Lysine. Do I need anything else??? I put them into chicken tractors about 4-5 days a week so they are getting some fresh grass and bugs. they get access to our composter not by our choice--they just help themselves. i give them blueberries, apples, pears and veggies when they start getting a little old for my tastes. How do i make these past two months up??? I'm buying something already together until I can figure out exactly what i need to make my own feed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

booboomama's oats and yogurt is like a oatmeal consistency.

I pour the yogurt in margarine tubs that I recycle for the chickens kitchen scraps, then stir in enough oatmeal to make it thick. First batch I made I fed without freezing...the yogurt flew all over.

Today they got the second batch that was frozen. They were finishing off the last of it when we closed up the coop/run to head into the house for supper. They really enjoy the frozen treats on hot days.

ON: Like your idea of giving them the whey and using the rest for us!
