MJ's little flock

Any particular breed or just bitsas? I’ve wondered if dogs brought up with chickens from puppies would one day turn on them, or whether they have to be a particular breed.
They're cross between poodle and spaniel. Knee high, scruffy little darlings. One mostly white with brown patches, one almost entirely black but for a few white chest hairs.

I've had the same thoughts about pups and chickens. I ended up reading about hard and soft mouthed dogs. Apparently dogs like spaniels hold birds gently while dogs like terriers crush them.

So if the worst happened, spaniels might be gentler than terriers.

But I'd need to keep dogs and chickens completely separated in order to have peace of mind.

I highly endorse that. I think over time you could train a smart dog but I'm not certain I'd ever be fully comfortable with it.

Good evening folks :frow

Dogs can be very good with chickens, it all depends on breed and the dog's personality. My PFP would lay in the pasture and let the birds groom her. Any predators were toast. My LGD doesn't care to spend time with the chickens but will kill any predator that comes near. Totally different personalities.

It'll be a long time before the funrun is fully dog proof. I'm still waiting on a start date for the veranda reconstruction and the paving around the run will follow after that project.

Also, I'm not thrilled at the thought of Blossom being unhappy. Although keeping dogs away from her will be possible if the funrun is dog proof.
