MJ's little flock

What a refreshing treat! How have they been doing in the summer heat Bob?
Very little heart stress here. Lots of shade and water. They have born this summer better than any I can remember. Even Aurora who has never done well in heat. She is just fluffier than everyone else.

I really need a hug right now.
Yesterday evening I fed all the chickens, and they all seemed fine. Then when I went out later to shut them up for the night I found that Betty had died.
I have no idea why, but I think something like a heart attack is most likely, as it looked like it happened just as she was jumping up onto the roost.
I don't know what to do with Bertha now, she seems alright but one hen with two cockerels isn't going to go very well, and she never really fitted in with any of the other hens.
Its been a rotten week in one way and another.. :(
Oh my gosh! I'm so very sorry. :hugs :hugs :hugs

In happier news, look who got her first egg of the season done and dusted!

15 minutes later and she's still talking about it :)

Katie provided an outstanding "watch over Mary" service. Or she might've been waiting her turn on the nest?

@Sussex19 i’m sorry for your loss of Betty. Bad news always come in a row 🙁 hope your next days are better.
Do you have another "odd one out" who could go in with Bertha ? I suppose they could stay like this for a little while but at some point it will pose a problem!

I don't understand how people dump roosters. I do know and understand about the ugly human nature 🙁, and that the number of cats and dogs that are abandoned is horrendous... but for the roosters, I don't get why not just kill them, or give them free to people who will kill them for food ?
