Thinking about Joyce and hoping she continues to improve.

It's a hard call but I think I would have asked Dr Mark to put an end to her. She's had a wonderfull life under your care and even if she gets to the point that a hysterectomy is vaiable with the breed there are often othe complications that will end their lives.

When I got home from work, Joyce wanted to come out of the run and have dinner with the other hens. I said OK, but don't overdo it and you still have to go see Dr Mark and have tonight's injection.

She seems to be handling it just fine.

Aww, beautiful girl. I have a soft spot for ISA Browns but it just breaks my heart that they die so young.

The similarities are quite remarkable. However, don't worry, after all the fights and generally antisocial behaviour there comes a day when your son will be big enough and old enough to put his arm around you and tell you he loves you and all those years of stress and discord will fade away.
If you have daughters the long term outcome may not be quite so rosy.

They produce what people buy. If there's no market for heavy layers then different characteristics will prevail.

I read so many sad stories here about chickens dying after a couple prolific egg-producing years that I decided to go with a breed that would lay less, but live longer. We'll see how it goes.
