Modern Bantam Pictures~

Learned a lot from the show this weekend. (Also came home with reserve champ waterfowl :yesss:) Looking at the modern games, there were probably 15 or 20 there, mine seemed comparative in type but they have very light faces in comparison to most at the show, although some birds were very light in the face. I was busy with ducks after they were placed so unfortunately didn't get to see how they placed before everyone had cooped out. I met and talked with some breeders of modern game and discussed the coloring of mine. My two blues are ok, my roo and one of the hens appear to be a silver blue split of some kind and not a "real" color. Not advisable to breed him if I aim to show. So I may rehome him/them if I can find a trio of a true color. I thoroughly enjoy them though.

On a sadder note. I found my black hen dead yesterday. There was a rat living in the coop that has been haunting me for months but have been unable to eradicate it. When I saw her I went inside the coop (its not a walk in so I use the term went inside loosely. When I was in there pulling her out the rat jumped out (almost on me) and rat out into the field, my sister was over with her lab and when she saw the rat she went for it. About a 30 yard chase ended up with a dead rat that was AS BIG AS MY HEN. I don't know if the rat killed her or one of my layers. I removed the others and have them in a temp enclosure until I can build them their own private coop.

Congrats on your waterfowl!! It’s always fun going to shows, especially to learn about a breed!
So sorry about your loss!! We had problems with rats a few years back before I had Moderns. I had regulaur bantamd, who’s heads were eaten by rats...the little suckers ate the fricken poison, but pooped out little green poop. We COULDnot find any poison to kill them!! We finally resorted to locking a cat in the coop, and poured extra water from chores down any holes in the run they had tunneled. They eventually disappear...hope you have no other problems!!

Me too! Another question that I didn't have time to ask Saturday. Could you tell me what varieties of Modern Game breed true? My friend bought some Lemon Blue Old English at the show and they were beautiful but the breeder said they don't breed true so some of the offspring produced would be split colors that aren't recognized. What are my options if I want a variety that only produces the color that it is?

Ooh! There are quite a few. First, Lemon Blue times a Lemon Blue DO NOT breed true, but it’s a longer process to breed true! I have a Lemon Blue Sport. Sports bred to a brow red will get you Lemon blues. Say your sport die. Breed a Lemon Blue to Lemon Blue to get a split of sports and Lemon Blue. It’s a long process. Silver blues are this way too.
Now for the colors you are looking for! Here’s a list of the ones I can think of~
  • Birchen
  • Brown red
  • Duck wing (silver or golden)
  • Wheaten
  • Red Pyle
  • Blacks
  • Whites
  • Black breasted
  • Blues
  • Blue Breasted Red
These are the only I can think of now, that are for sure true (they state it in my standard book) but two others that I’m not 100% sure, are Gingers, and splashes. I personally suggest/recommend Birchens or brown reds. They are a LOT easier to do well with! They don’t have hard feather patterns, just nice lacing, yet they have enough feather standards, unlike whites or blacks, that don’t win as often. I also enjoy Wheaton’s and Red pulses, the Roosters of these coloration are hard to get good coloring! If you have any certain coloration, and would like to see a picture of their color standards, let me know! I’ll crack open my book and share some pics!

Oh I always love pictures. I would prefer to have a flashier color as opposed to solids like whites, blacks, blues, ect. What colors are most competitive. I know with my calls Best of Breed almost always goes to a white. With d'Uccles its Mille Fleurs. Every breed seems to have a dominant color. Is it the Birchen & Brown Reds with MGB? I think I really like the looks of the BB Reds too. If you don't mind sharing some standard pics for those I would be very appreciative

Here’s a few! They might be out of order, sorry! If you can read any thing, let me know! If there are any others you’d like to see, let me know! Ignore the files attached at the bottom! They were a mistake!

Your welcome! Also, I realize I didn’t add it, but the Birchens are the same as Brown reds but instead of red/gold necks and lacing it’s white/silver
