They didnt pose very good. My intention is not to show, but to breed. I would however like to breed high quality show caliber birds. Please let me know. Wont hurt my feelings. New breed for me.

Like previously stated, I am not a Poultry Judge. It’s really hard for me to Judge Birds by photos. For example, the ABA Standard says in part, “ STATION: Exceedingly erect; model posture is for head to be carried at 90 degrees above the horizontal above the feet; contraction of wings and thighs to the body when in hand”. Please remember that some breeds may lean toward a fad. To find out what’s winning, go to shows and see the differences for yourself. I don’t know how to attach photos, but if you want to send me a private message with your email, I will send you some photos of winning Birds. You can look at them and see what changes you want to make.
Agreed, here’s a picture of one of my own brown Red hens. She isn’t perfect, and is leaned forward a tad too much. According to a big time breeder/winning showman, their head should be in line with their toes. The birchen ive included as well is almost perfectly in line with her toes, and is standing very well. The birchen won many large shows years ago before she aged I bought her for a brood hen. The brown Red has been showed once, got second overall, but now has a permanent bald spot, preventing More showing. But her body shape, color, and posture are very nice, though in this picture she could also be stretched out more (check out their feet, the back toe should be off the ground, the bird balancing mostly on their toes, in these pictures the birchen has a much better stance)

As for the pictures, at the very top of the reply box, there are little buttons, one has an “image” with mountains/sun, if you click that, then choose file, you can then decide where to get your pictures. If I’m your phone, click photo library to see your camera roll. I’m not sure about computers, though it might be something like “my drive” or “this computer/files”.

Also, just now seing the pictures, the first one has good lacing, though depending on the hens, the lighter stuff near the bottom might pass through the entire breast, as it has on a few of mine. The second cock has very nice lacing as well. But it also depends on the amount of lacing the hens have as well, to determine if the babies will have nice lacing too.

Those are really nice birds. IMHO, if you get the wing carriage of the brown red on the birchen and you have a homerun. Those are really nice birds.

I wish I knew what to tell you. Your Brown Reds are a pretty good start. Look at Delaney’s birds and compare them to each other and compare them to yours. Where you have a bird with a fault, such as having a larger head, breed to a bird with a small snake looking head. I have yet to see the perfect modern. Delaney has most likely been breeding these birds for a long time. Breed for that small snake head, small body, and long legs. Breed for birds that when posing, has their head running perpendicular with their feet. Go to shows and after the show ask the judge how you can improve your birds. Most of the judges would love to discuss them with you. Compare the Best of Breed with your birds and write down the differences. It takes a lot of hatching and cull hard. Stay with it and you’ll get their. I don’t know if this is true and you might want to ask someone else, but I use breeding females for type and males for color. My personal preference is type before color. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your feedback! Upon reading you message I immediately went out back and culled the few birds that I had. Just kidding. I truly appreciate the feedback. These are the first moderns I have any experience with and I figured someone serious about showing wouldn't sell off their premium show stock. These obviously didnt make the cut.

They still got me interested in the breed and they are cool little birds. That being said. I would like to acquire show quality birds to breed and potentially show. I plan on attending some larger shows this upcoming year. I've been wondering how you go about purchasing birds at shows? I always see about people buying high quality birds from people at shows.

I appreciate both of your feedback very much!

When buying these birds, I suggest buying from well known, good showmen. They most likely will not show their winning birds, but will set you up with breeding birds to get your own showers. At shows, try to compare the birds for sale to those in the competition. Most that are being sold are most likely (not always though) good birds, as most people want to get a good name for them selves and sell good birds. Others think they have something good, when they probably aren’t. I also suggest looking from the actual open show, and not from the junior section! Birds in the silent auction are usually very nice as well.

And remeber, if your current birds aren’t exactly the way you want them, you can breed certain characteristics into the line, with over lacing, underlacing, or birds that wouldn’t do anything in a show, and get winning birds! It takes a few rounds of hatching and raising to see exactly what you need more/less of in your breeding pair!

What crosses can you use to breed lemon blue moderns? Can you cross a birchen with a lemon blue sport to get lemon blues? I don’t know much about genetics.

Hello! Lucky for you, Lemon blues are my main project! The genetics do become a little tricky, but the basic way to get this variety is with a lemon Blue sport, and a brown Red. Using a birchen would most likely give you crosses/colors more closely resembling Silver blues than lemons. If you don’t have any brown reds, and end up breeding the sport to a birchen, if you end up with a bird that looks like or is a lemon blue, then you can breed that baby back to the sport, and get a mix of lemon blues and sports. (So, a lemon Blue sport bred to a lemon blue gives you a mix of lemon blues and sports!)
Let me know if I didnt get your question answered all the way!

Thanks! That was very helpful. Would crossing a birchen with a splash make silver blues?

I’m not sure. Silver bled are the exact same genetically as lemon blues, it takes a sport and a birchen to get a nice silver blue. But, I once had a silver blue rooster breed a birchen, and I got a show winning pullet. Splash don’t have the silver blue blood, so I would assume that silver blues wouldn’t occur, but I’m not positive.
