Modern people are the people of today...the old timers were the people

One of the reasons people didn't smile in photos back then was due to lack of dental care; they didn't want their bad teeth showing for all posterity.

Very neat photos, thanks for sharing!

Good point.

They look so dour because they are living in sod houses and doing all the other things we think are cool today.

Also you could not keep smiling with LONG exposure with the film. Your cheeks will get tired and have to "unsmile" LOL!

Also from what I heard, while reading history books, that smiling was the sign of "come here" in a sexual way or someone who was "sneaky".

I am guessing it was around WWII or sometime after WWI that people starting to smile in photos.

What wonderful photos! I hope you know who the people are. These treasures from the past give us such insight into the lives of ordinary people. They are part of our social history. I'm sure these people could teach us all a thing about making do and mending, surviving on very little and enjoying what life has to offer. |The world could certainly do with their expertise now!!

The dust storm in the second pic was caused by the settlers plowing the prairie under, from east to west. If the plowed from north to south the wind wouldn't of spent the next 50 years picking up the topsoil & carrying it to the eastern seaboard. That was a major contributor to the great depression...

This is one of my favorite old pics. It's a weathered goat pulling a cart in a parade in my home town 110 years ago. The very first missionary's taught the Indians Christianity in this town. Which really made a difference in their drinking & disorderly conduct toward the settlers(alcohol supplied by settlers). But when the missionary's built the refined Indians there own church, the 2 missionary's were drug to death by the settlers behind horses........ I just love history.
