Quote:
Loneliness was a horrible companion.
This Remus had decided long ago, but there wasn't much he could do to help the situation. Every neigh, though meant for another, was welcome in contrast to the utter silence devoid of friendship in which the Norwegian Fjord had found himself. He snorted at his own self-pity, and pushed it from his mind. It didn't matter now. There were horses nearby--he had heard their whinnies, even the quiet whisper of a mare to her foal had carried itself to him on the breeze. It had been a solid week since he had the pleasure of hearing, let alone seeing, any horses, and the sounds struck a chord of longing. He had to stop, even if it was just for a moment. Even if it was just one glimpse.
It was then that he heard it. A sob.
Curiously Remus stopped, flicking an ear in the direction of the sound. It was close. Slowly, he turned his head, and saw the horses.
They were standing not far off, talking, one trying to reassure a mare who had obviously recently foaled. A delighted whinny was on the tip of Remus's tongue at the sight. His deep brown eyes grew big, bright. Horses! Fellow horses!
Yet the whinny did not escape from him. The mare was obviously in pain, and Remus moved closer, silently, without alerting attention to himself.
"Hello . . ." he whinnied quietly to them, his voice breaking slightly from lack of use. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
