Gemma remained silent. Surely Layla couldn't find her if she was quiet. After all, surely her mother needed to hear her voice in order to know where to find her. Eagerly she sniffed the pine tree, then began to roll in the fallen needles.

Startled, she got to her feet, sliding a bit on the needles and falling sideways again. How had her mother known where to find her? The question was puzzling, and she got to her feet, eyes wide with surprise and shock. "How dwid you know twere to find me?" she asked, bewildered.
