This is Molly the Barnevelder

When we first got her she was 8 weeks old and the sweetest thing. She loved to be snuggled, and liked to perch on your shoulder. Now a year and a half later she is the grumpiest chicken. If I open the nesting box door while she is laying she will yell at the top of her lungs and refuse to lay an egg for the rest of the day. You can see her yelling in this photo:
"Why are you opening the door while I am laying MY egg?!"
And puffed up in these photos:

Molly has a very scrict bedtime. She likes to go in about an hour before everyone else. She does not like being interupted when she wants to go to bed. One night as we were eating dinner I heard a chicken screaming. I went rushing out to find..... Lacey sitting on the ramp blocking it and Molly yelling at her to get off it so she could go to bed. She will also growl when angry.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my grumpy chicken!

What a cute little hen! And with an attitude, haha. Such a cute story! I hope you will share more of Molly's adventures with us soon!

It sounds like her growling, yelling, and puffing may be signs of broodiness, though. Does she spend a lot of time in the nest box? Has she stopped laying recently?

She did go broody in April, but she is out of it, she was EXTREMLY grumpy when she was broody.... She has been molting recently, but still just as grumpy as ever. She has been grumpy the last year pretty much.

I guess she is just a hen with Chickentude...

She likes her personal space, I guess.

Lol, the funny thing is, she is at the bottom of the pecking order, she gets scared of some of the other chickens really easy. But when she gets mad, she gets really mad.... Oh and theoldchick, I am so sorry about your rooster, your pictures and stories of him always made me laugh.

I never knew a chicken growled until Monday. My son came in and said Punky was in the nesting box, making an odd noise. I went in later to check on her, she made the same noise. I waited, then picked her up to check her. (How brave, lol) she seemed fine, so I think it might have been a growl. She's my meany, too.
