Molly Watch - We Got Babies!!! And PICS (post 1)

Everything I've heard is that seramas are awesome mamas. I'm not sure yet whether I'll be able to leave them in the pen with Mandee and Rohaus. Last year my BO's hatched some chicks and they grew up in the pen wth the rest of the girls and nobody bothered them. If I leave them in, I'll most likely set them up a nice, dry place to sleep on the bottom of the pen. The BO moms stayed on the ground with their chicks until they were able to climb the ladder to the roosting area, so I'm thinking things might work out so well with the serama. I just don't have a lot of experience with this breed.

Splash has definitely been an amazing mama! She still has her chicks sleep under her, and they're about 3/4 her size now.

I personally moved my hen and her chicks into a storage bin for the first five or so days so nothing traumatic would happen, and then introduced them to my rooster and other serama hen after that. They all did fine together from there on out.

The more I wring my hands over this, the more I think that I should put Molly in a nice big Rubbermaid tote to finish hatching these eggs. Or I have a nice cat cozy that's she's overnighted in many times. Maybe more familiar.... Not that I'm afraid that Rohaus and Mandee might hurt the chicks, but that she's on the second story and I'm afraid of one falling. They're due this coming week! Those and the 10 more in my bator! I'll be candling on Tuesday before lockdown. Depending on how many and when Molly's clutch starts to hatch, I may slip another egg or two under her.

We're rounding the bend and nearing day 18 (which I believe is tomorrow). At lunch today, I stopped to check on Molly. I noticed that Mandee was not outside with Rohaus. Rohaus is crowing and pacing up and down the ladder to their coop. I half expected to find Mandee on board in the hatching department. What I did not expect was the death-metal lockdown broody scream that assaulted my ears when I opened the door to that coop! Both tails went up and Molly looked like she was tucking something under her chest. It's quite possible there is a chick under her, but together they scared the bejeezus out of me so I quietly snapped this photo and closed the door to the coop.
We'll have to check back later this evening. I know that Mandee has stolen one of Molly's eggs. I saw that much. It will be Molly that goes in the crate with the chicks once they hatch. She did all the work, so back off Mandee!

Just another quick pic today. Egg number 4 is hatching and is probably already out and fluffed while I sit here at work.....

Rohaus was introduced to the babies today. I think he's proud! The girls let him inside the coop birthing room even! Today, right after work, I plan to go home and chick proof the pen. I need to get the bottom set up so that I can bring the babies downstairs and moms can start teaching them the way of the chicken!
