Molt Before Laying, really?

Hi,

I have a 26 week old Bantam Cochin, Princess Lou, who hasn't started to lay yet. She goes through the motions of sitting on the other hens eggs acting like she might lay, but then doesn't. Yesterday I noticed that she has started to lose feathers on her head. Ugh, molting before laying. Is that possible? Will she ever lay or is just going to be pretty?

Thanks,Robin

She is only losing feathers at the top of her head....so far. I do not have a rooster and none of the other hens go anywhere near her head or anywhere else on her for that matter.

Thank you for asking.
Robin

I can't tell from the pictures, but where on her head is she losing feathers? Do you have a rooster? If so, I'd wonder if she isn't getting her feathers pulled during mating instead of molting.
