Molted combs

Hi chicken folx!

I have three 7 mo old buff Orpington pullets and noticed that there were what looked like dried up molted combs on the ground of the run. My girls have healthy vibrant combs. I cant find anything online that talks about molted combs only frostbite which isn’t the case here. Please see pics and let me know your experience with this. Thanks!

Birds don't molt their combs. It must have been an injury that caused it to come off.

Last time I had a hen lose a comb, or wattle it was cuz a nasty hen fight broke out.

Thanks, but I found three of them! I am with them throughout the day and have never seen any injury or blood. I can’t understand what these are?

Thanks, isn’t this so strange? There have been three of these (the other two were much larger). I have never seen them fight, nor have I seen any blood or injury. These pics are from today!

Have you been feeding any berries or fruit? The color on the paper towel is purple-ish which makes me think that’s some old fruit or food. If it was a hunk of flesh this would not be this berry color.

That’s a great observation and at first I thought maybe it was a dried flower because they do get flowers/herbs at times. But the only dark berries they have has were mushed up blackberries a few days ago. I wish I saved the larger ones! I also wondered if it was a critter maybe they ate? I am stumped!

Then they must not be chicken combs.....unless someone tossed them in the your yard?

Hi, thanks. Keep in mind it is dried up and three times smaller than when i found it. I would definitely noticed if Hibiscus was in the mix and since the three things were found in their locked run, I can't imagine who could’ve put anything in there. (I said Hibiscus because I did a reverse google image search and this looks a LOT like dried hibiscus. Only more straight)
