My Speckled Sussex are 9 months old. The other day I noticed feathers all over their run. I thought there might be a feather picker so I watched them for awhile and didn't see one. I did see that Betty is the one missing feathers. I was letting them free range and I went to grab her and she ran I grabbed her tail feathers and one fell out fairly easily. I looked her over and didn't find any mites or lice. Feathers were falling out of her just from me moving them to look for bugs. I did notice that up by her head there are new feathers starting to grow in. She is not acting any differently. Is this just a soft molt or could it be something else?

All my hens molt in April/May. Always have. No eggs right now for me.

Glad I have this post to look back on. LOL my SS are at it again with their Molting in April. This time I just found it odd because they molted in Sept/Oct too. I guess they just want to have pretty feathers.
