So we got our girls last April. They have all started to molt, probably around August or so, but one seems to be molting really hard. When the weather began to change, we had about a week no eggs, then slowly got to two or so and now we are back up to 4 a day. The one that is molting really bad we believe is the one not laying. My question is how long does the molt usually last? She has super dull feathers and is just looks unwell. She’s eating fine, hanging with the other girls and is acting normal, but just looks awful. Is this normal? I will try to take a photo in the morning as it’s dark here now. All the other girls look fine and are acting as they usually do, so I’m not concerned about a catchy illness.

Thanks!

Some birds molt harder than others and each they molt at a different intensity. Molting takes a pretty big toll on their little bodies and it’s important to increase their protein intake while they go through it. Some can get through a molt in just a couple weeks while others may take months. I’ve had one take just over three.

If you want to help her out you can start giving scrambled eggs or some sort of high protein treat. Some people add ACV to their water just to give an immune boost but if you do I’d make sure to offer a separate clear water source.
