How long does molting last? Do they totally stop laying during that time? My # Buffs (molting for the first time?) have not layed in a week and nothing else has really changed. They are a 15ish months old.

At 15 months it's time for a molt. They should lay again, in time, but probably not as many eggs. The length of a molt varies a lot, I'm not sure, but several weeks. They generally stop laying during the molt. You can increase their protein intake and maybe help them get trough it with a little less stress, or more quickly, as they need protein to grow new feathers.

what is a good protein addition for chickens in molt? Eggs, yogurt... I have had to limit their free ranging because they have feasted on my growing hostas and until I change to more unappetizing plants they're what I've got.

my chickens are also going through a molt. I feed them some moistened cat food, it has 30% protein from animal sources. this helps them grow back their feathers faster.
