Molting

I have one girl just starting her first molt. Last year they all had a very light one so this is the first year one has had a good molt. I was noticing that she stopped laying eggs. So I thought she decided to lay else where. I have been looking over my yard to see if I can find any eggs.

Well later that same day I notices an explosion of feathers. At first I thought she was being pecked at. This morning I took our garbage down to the curb, And when I got back she just happened to shake and poof feathers every where.

I noticed that she has not been as loving as usual. She would normally be the one that would jump on my back or shoulder and sit there. But at least I know whats going on with her now. It was so funny to she her shake and then feathers every where.

That would have been funny to see. Mine still haven't started their molts. They are 7 months old now.

Do you know when they should start their molt?

I've had our 3 chickens for a few months (they are supposidly 1 year olds) and they were great layers until a few weeks ago- we went from 3 eggs/day to 1 if we are lucky. Lots of feathers in the hen house the last week or so, and other than that, everyone seems normal. Will we ever get eggs again???

this is my girls back i havent had a chicken molt before and the others have been picking at it is it a molt or is she sick and what can i do to keep from getting infected?it is between wings and slightly under her wing feathers when they are layed back

They get grumpy when molting. She will return to her normal self when she's finished.

Probably not until next year, but I've had some 9 month old pullets go through minor molts.

Yes, when they are done molting. It is normal to have a slow down in egg production in the fall, when the days are getting shorter.

That is not molting. Have you checked her for mites/lice? She could be picking out the feathers if she has mites or lice. For mites, look at night, they don't come out during the day. For lice, look under her wings and near her vent - they are brown little bugs.

i have che ked and none that i see i treated my coop a few months back including chicks would all my girls be like this because she isnt pulling them out the others are

So that explains why my Red Island red is not molting and still laying she just started laying around June. My Brock
