Hi,

I have read a lot of incredibly helpful information on this site for the past few months but wanted to now join officially. This is my first go at chickens but so far, so good thanks to a lot of what I've found here.

I have four 24 day old chicks. Eleanor Roosevelt is a Delaware, Amelia Earhart is a Buff Orpington, Althea Gibson is a Barred Rock and Jane Goodall is a Rhode Island Red. They join my family of 6 kids, 2 dogs, 1 rabbit, 1 bearded dragon and 1 husband. We live in the 'burbs but are busily building a coop and run in our smallish backyard that should be quite spacious for four birds. I was primarily interested in a fresh egg source but am pretty shocked how quickly I have become attached to these feathered friends. The eggs almost seem secondary to me now.

I am an avid gardener and will be trying to compost as much as possible. In my mind, I see the whole backyard cycle thing working perfectly. We'll see if my mind is right! When I'm not outside grubbing around in the dirt, I'm an artist working out of my home studio.

Looking forward to meeting you all and learning as much as I can.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! They really do become part of the family and I don't know where I would be without my chickens. The garden would be way to quiet and no chicken TV!!
Love the names you have for your chicks they are great. There is a gardening section here too on BYC if you would like to drop by here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16176/gardening

Wishing you the very best of luck with your new flock in the future. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes! I know I'm going to have lots of questions (including my spidey senses telling me my Eleanor Roosevelt might actually be a Franklin?) so I will be sure to check out all parts of the site.
