Momma hen has been sitting on three eggs for at least 24 days now.

One chick hatched on Monday afternoon.

The other two eggs (when candled) look full and near the end of gestation. (or whatever it's called in chicken land) but it's been two days since the first chick hatched...

Does anyone know TECHINICAL information regarding hatching?

I can't bring myself to crack open an egg (or disgard) a possible life....

I don't know anything about hatching, but maybe you should just wait a few more days

If its been since Monday, I would go by TSC or your local feed store and buy no more than 10 more chicks. slip them under her and take the eggs out. They should have hatched by now. But take advantage of her as a brooder!

oh gosh no...we are giving away the chick...we don't want anymore chickens...she just happen to get broody when we were on vacation and we couldn't bare to kill a living creature....so we let her hatch them out and out of the 3 eggs...so far (day 26+) only the one hatched...

...curious how you know when an egg is no good? I want to take the eggs out, but I know myself and I'll have to crack them open for curiousity sake and I will just cry my eyes out if one is alive and could of made it...but if they are not living & not developed and a good science project for my kids, that would be great.

Just don't want to kill anything...wondering what's the longest gestation in egg world???

I wold give it a week, what's the harm?

When mine were broody, (same as you) I really didn't need anymore but let her have just a few eggs. Not all would hatch. She should get up soon and leave the nest. When that happens the egg(s) that are left, you can pitch.

I agree.... let it go another week. Then you'll know for sure. What's the harm? Do you have a stethoscope? Could you have a listen?

I am in the same boat; but I have 3 Silkies sitting on eggs. We are on day 24! Last time they hatched like clockwork on day 21. I am trying to be patient... Did anymore of yours hatch?

I would trust the hen in this instance. If she still thinks that there is a reason to be on those eggs then they might still be viable. She will know soon if they aren't going to make it.
