That happened to me, after running the neighbors dog off four times, he managed to come back and took a chicken. I had my son watch where he went while I got the gun. The dog ran home with the bird in his mouth thinking he was safe on his owners porch, and thats where he died from a double shot of bird shot from my shotgun. Owner came out and I reloaded. The owner could see my chicken in his dogs mouth, and as I reloaded the ol double barrell, he decided not to say a word. I walked home and left him to bury his dog and my bantam hen. He even had an electric fence around his place, yet the dog figured out how to beat it......well til he got my bird that is.

To all those who keep saying "it's not the dogs fault" You are correct. But you'll get in more trouble if you shoot the dogs owner.

Oh I would light the dog up with paintball or rock salt first and that would be the only warning they got. I would tell the neighbors that if the dog(s) come back, they will be shot or turned over to the proper authorities.

Contact animal control again and ask them exactly what circumstances are required in order to shoot the dog(s). Then you know what you can and cannot do legally.

I was going to say exactly what Jody said. Where I live in Colorado, you would be charged with animal cruelty for shooting the dog with a paintball gun. You would be within your rights to shoot it and kill it, however.
