I'm thinking it was a joking one. My mom always joked with us that puppies weren't as much trouble...you could leave them home alone...lock them in a cage when you left...etc.

Another one I just thought of:

All through my teen years I begged to get my ears pierced. My father would always say "If God wanted holes in your earlobes you would have been born with them".

I always got a kick out of that one, because it was the only time he ever believed in God. How convenient.

I'm sure it was meant to be funny, but still.......

Sometimes my dad would see an unattrative person and say-

Shes pretty in two ways.............Pretty ugly, and pretty apt to stay that way!
OR- He's pretty aint he? Yep, pretty dumb and pretty apt to stay that way.

Yeah, I know, that was 'pretty' mean of him, but we still thought the saying was funny.

My mom always told us girls-

"Always wear matching, pretty underwear because, when you feel pretty on the outside, you'll feel pretty on the inside" .

Yep, I'm afraid I was just a tad a disapointment to the folks in my younger days. Here they were, fine upstanding citizens and then... me

I wasn't a bad kid exacly... but Lord knows I stayed in trouble.

You just had to know my folks, we all thought it was funny.

I was the kind of kid that thought if jumping my bike over a little wood ramp in the yard was fun.... then I bet it would be REALLY fun to jump my bike off the roof of the barn. (That one really hurt BTW.

And do you have any idea how much it stings when your cousin shoots a marble out from between your fingers with a 22?

It's a wonder I lived long enough to grow a brain.

"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

"You'll miss me when I'm gone." Said to us as teenagers every time we rolled our eyes at whatever she was saying or doing.

"It's colder than a witches" ... wait...better not repeat that one here. Sorry.

"You have to suffer to be beautiful. " Said everytime I jumped when she pulled the knots out of my hair.

Same here. My mom said it when my brother and I locked our youngest in a dog cage...Or when we hooked a chain to the back of the car and cat on a trash can lid and let them pull us...
