Mothers of BYC, what is the best baby gift or item that has proved handy with your babies? I'm looking for something yoy might have discovered later and wished you had it earlier
A coworker (first time mom, baby of the family, not much experience with babies) is due soon and her baby registry list is a little out of my price range or a little impractical. (imo)
Any suggestions?
I usually make a baby blanket but I don't have the time it takes.
Thanks!
Edit: would it be considered rude/chintzy to sign up to buy a certain item but buy a lower cost item that's the same? I.e organic receiving blankets from a prominent baby store ($32) vs organic receiving blankets from amazo.n ($13)?

One thing it think was helpful for a baby was the little pads babies sleep on to protect the beds. You may think about getting a cute baby outfit one size larger than tiny, they grow so fast and sometimes they don't even fit the tiny stuff at birth.
That's what I was thinking with the next size up for clothes.
the crib pad is a really good idea! Thanks!

I don't see what difference it would make.

To your question, you are not obligated to buy the exact item. Gifting is about the thought and not the item itself, if the receiver doesn't take it well that's on them not you. Especially for a coworker.

Personally, I always gift diapers in larger sizes like a 2 (and loved getting diapers myself). You can never go wrong with diapers. 😁 Typically they get nb or size 1 so a size up guarantees they won't be overwhelmed with the small sizes.

Ok, good, thank you, I was hoping that was the case.
I usually buy a few packs of diapers and wipes but she's doing cloth diapers that have removable pads in them and I'm not sure how the sizing works. I think I'll get a few packs of wipes, you can never have enough wipes. I may get a pack of diapers for traveling since not everywhere is convenient for dealing with cloth diapers.

That's a good idea. Everyone I've known who used cloth diapers still uses disposables occasionally for convenience. Never can have too many wipes either!

Another idea could be a wet bag. Something similar to this:

These didn't exist when my kiddos were babies but I would have loved them! We use them for summer camp pool days or when camping/traveling for wet clothes.

Those are great! I'll add those to the list.

One thing I would like to add about the newborn or smaller sizes is that a lot of people have the line of thinking that everybody else is going to buy them and buy the next size up, and then the mother-to-be actually has very little or none in the small size. It happened to me, it happened to one of my friends (She literally went to the store to buy newborn clothes a week before her due date 🤣), and I've come across it several times online. Just food for thought.
Personally I don't think it's a big deal to buy a generic version of a more expensive item, as long as it has similar specs to what the item was that was on the registry.
One of my sisters gave me a little bath basket that she put together herself. It wasn't very expensive but it was so cute and almost all of it was consumable. She bought a cute decorative metal tin pail and bought a baby-sized towel, washcloths, lotion, a gentle baby wash, and other similar items to put in it. Super cute!

Hope I'm not too late with suggestions...
If this is her first, a mom self care package might be nice (especially if she's BF) The entire process is so hard on the body and mind and Moms can sometimes feel a little forgotten in all the baby fever.
Another thing I wish I'd had from the start though: one of those mirrors that hang on the rear seat headrest so you can see baby in the carseat while driving.
