Moms of BYC- I need baby gift ideas!

Mothers of BYC, what is the best baby gift or item that has proved handy with your babies? I'm looking for something yoy might have discovered later and wished you had it earlier
A coworker (first time mom, baby of the family, not much experience with babies) is due soon and her baby registry list is a little out of my price range or a little impractical. (imo)
Any suggestions?
I usually make a baby blanket but I don't have the time it takes.

Edit: would it be considered rude/chintzy to sign up to buy a certain item but buy a lower cost item that's the same? I.e organic receiving blankets from a prominent baby store ($32) vs organic receiving blankets from amazo.n ($13)?

I found cloth diapers to be the perfect burp clothes. They absorb very well and wash up good

If mine got too worn out my husband took them to use in his shop. He loved them!

These are the new kind that have a big replaceable pads in them, I'm not quite sure how effective they are consider babies leak and you'd probably have to change the whole thing anyway.
We used old cloth diapers as dust/clean up rags.
