So I was grocery shopping a few weeks ago and noticed a clerk gathering the wilted, older veggies onto a cart. I thought to ask the manager what they do with those - turns out, they put them out the side door every morning for anyone who wants/. them to take for free. He told me many area farmers stop by each morning. So this morning, I stopped by and got a bunch of strawberries (no mold, just very ripe) three bags of red leaf lettuce (which our rabbits love) and a bunch of soft apples. Anyone who is getting budget crunched might appreciate this as a way to make the feed budget stretch a little farther.

Hey?! How about a thread on "Money Saving Ideas" and keep it current? I bet there are ways to save on electricity, coop building, etc. In fact I've read them scattered in different threads. I wish I'd known about Craig's List before I built my first coop, I would have converted a child's playhouse instead.

My mom works at a health food store so I get chop 2 times a week. And I mean I get a lot too! It does save money because they consume less feed. I'm very thankful too! You should keep getting as much as you can!

Is this from a chain store, or a locally owned little one? I've tried getting chain grocery stores (it's all we had around) to give or even sell me their old produce at a lower price, and have been told that they are not allowed to do it, any unsold products have to be destroyed.

I'd love to get the bad produce for my goats though, they love that kind of thing! Those girls are like pigs, they eat anything, especially when they are pregnant!

Yeah. Something about they might get sued if you get sick from eating their out of date food.
Even if you take it "for the animals" they don't really know that you're not gonna try to sue them later.

That's us Americans, the wasteful ones.

Our store Donates things like that to the food bank (over ripe, not moldy) so there are many people that benefit from it.
