Definitely no ground contact for it to be effective but vegetation touching the wire will diminish effectiveness.

As far as camera goes. I'm a bit overwhelmed and underwhelmed. The software/apps used to monitor remotely leave me with privacy concerns. The apps require system permissions that give me the heebie jeebies. I don't care if people want to watch my chickens but they ask for access to contacts and gps etc on your phone. That's concering. There are so many things to consider, night vision, weather proof, tilt, pan, resolution, wifi range, ease to install and use, etc etc My head is swimming. I'm thinking about just getting a really inexpensive "indoor" model that I can set up on my covered front porch. It will be close to the router, close to power source, and I can just point it at my chicken yard. It pans and tilts and zooms The one I'm looking at is about $35 bucks.
I bought a camera on Amazon and never set it up. The privacy issues just freaked me out too much. I wanted to be able to monitor it remotely. If I do eventually set a camera up I think I might opt for a trail cam that is motion sensored.Hi Fricasee! What came out of this? Did you end up getting something> How's it working? I'm trying to solve the same issue.
