Montana Cold Weather and Letting My Chickens Free Range

I lived in the mountains just outside of Troy Montana on the Idaho line for about a year. Had a decent small chicken house, unheated, woth about 30 chickens of several different breeds. They done fine for me. I did shut them up at night though.

I have three runs. One 8x24 and one 8x16 both have covered roofs and in the winter I cover them with plastic, not sealed up tight but enough so they don't get full of snow. I put a bale of straw in the run and stack bales of hay for them to climb on. Now you could snow blow an area for them. I can't say whether they won't lose any toes or not. One thing to be concerned about is them getting stuck in the snow.

Not the best pic but you get the idea. You can use cheap plastic drop cloths if you like.
