What kind of chickens do you raise? I'm still working on my husbands arm (only married one year now). He's atleast agreed that chckens will be good but I need to save money for the coop first! I'm hoping to be able to start building either fall 2011 or summer 2012 if all goes well with money.

Howdy!

What part of MT are you from?​

Brr! We have a blizzard in my part of the state this morning. Visibity 0! Highway is closed and my DS is home for a snow day. Perfect day for some holiday baking.

I have several breeds. A few mixes I hatched and BRs, Buffs, Australorps, Gold Lace Wyandottes, Silver laced W, RIR, Frizzle, Silkie, Mottled Cochin, EE, white leghorns, Japanese Bantam and a Sicilian buttercup.

You know a chicken coop doesn't have to be super fancy or expensive. Our first one my DH went all out. He built me a very nice insulated, wired, good windows, very nice and Home Depot loved us the day we bought the supplies. Don't get me wrong I love it! However this new flock I just got was a last minute deal. The neighbor down the road called and wanted to get rid of her flock asap. 12 young laying hens and a duck for free, but take them NOW. We have a building that was a chicken coop sometime before my FIL was born and he is mid 60s. It has been a shed in his lifetime and was full of farm stuff but had always been cared for. The roof has been tinned. It is a sound building and predator proof but not insulated. I'm just saying, look around your property, maybe you don't have to wait as long as you think

Snowing here too. Looks to be mainly on the Hi-Line so far.

Yeah I used an old chicken house, but it is now falling down. Have a new one up though. Just wish we had the exterior tin up.

Have some RIR, EE, Blue Andalusions, SLW and some BB turkeys.

We only just got the edge of the storm wich ended with a light skiff and then the wind came up and blew it all away. I really thought it would get worse though. Stay safe and keep warm! Sounds like you have a nice assortmant of chickens.

I hope to raise and breed buff Brahma Bantams for exhibition, and then I'll have a few layer birds for the pure pleasure of it!

I've even picked out a few top breeders already that I'll be buying from to get my start of the brahmas.

Our property is a bare piece with a few black willows that pre existed, so the only buildings that are there are our house and my newly built taxidrermy shop. I have no real prospects that pre exist. I planned a coop that could easily support the requirements necessary for a small breeding opperation, plus a little area for my layers to live comfortably. Where I used to live I learned tons about predator proofing after loosing up to 16 chickens per day at times while trying to figure out where all the holes were and how to fix them. I finally got the perfect plan that should be fool proof unless (heaven forbid) a bear tries to get through.

Oh! I love Blue Andalusians!

I only had one growing up but she was one of my favs. A hatchery girl that layed wonderfully, had a wonderful disposition and always did well in the show ring at the local shows. Much fun!

Hi.. Im not from Montana.. BUT.... I have big plans on moving there next year..

Just trying to figure out how to bring with me six horses, one donkey, five dogs, three cats and about 20 chickens.. oh, and 5 call ducks. Not to mention me, husband and daughter.. LOL....

The problem is i dont know anyone in the state. My husbands job is based out of Missoula, so were looking around there...

If anyone wants to chat and give me info and guidence Id sure appreciate it.

Hi AliciaM I'm from Ennis wich is around 4 1/2 to 5 hours south of you.

I've had to make moves identicle to yours, (although I'm not sure how far your moving) with all the chickens, ducks, dogs and cats from Montana to Half Moon Bay, California and then from there to Hettinger, North Dakota with over 20 Horses more than we started, lol! Now I'm back in Montana and I've only got one horse and two cats now, with hopes for more chickens soon.
