All of a sudden I am not getting e-mail notifications when one of the threads that I'm subscribed to is updated....... so I didn't see that you had answered until just now.

I am in Hamilton, and I should know where you are, but I forget...... Have you got any calves out yet?


I will have started pullets at 14 weeks the first week in July (I can't sex them reliably before that) and then more after that date. If you are interested, the breeds and prices are on my web site http://www.cackleberrycoop.com/

We had our first bunch of babies hatch out this weekend under a broody hen. It's awfully nice to have chicks running around again!

Oh my that's one pretty hen cackleberry! So adorable! I would have loved babies running around! But I'm thrilled t tell you all I'm finally getting my coop fixed ( electricity, for lights and heat , a new built nest boxes since the original builder made my nest boxes to low and they have to duck in to lay eggs lol. Also getting an electric pop door! On to the pen, we will have a new 10x15 pen for my five girls with a metal roof and it will have 6 to 10 inches of sand. I will be selling the very expensive 10x10 dog kennel there in now. It has been wonderful, but I want to be able to staple plastic all the way around it in the winter instead of tarps , the tarps held up very well, but I would rather have a real wood pen with hard wire. The sparrows love to go through the fence for the food right now. I'm so happy ! Everything will be finally done so I can plant flowers out side the coop and bushes !

I loved the Marans cackleberry. My DD loved the rooster, that is one gorgeous bird.

Those sparrows can be so much trouble!!!!!! My husband makes me laugh sometimes, running outside flapping his arms and stomping his feet when he sees a large flock of the wild birds descending on our fields. I laugh, but feel his frustration!! I can only imagine the amount of money we have spent feeding those things!! I had a huge (12x60 ft) mobile home brought to our property and we converted it to a coop and hatchery. So far

the wild birds have not found their way inside and down the hall ways to the feeders. We tried to hide the feeders deep enough inside that the wild birds wouldn't find them, but I'm pretty sure it will only take them time.

They really are stunning boys AND I love their sweet natures. Sometimes a little too sweet actually. I've had to defend too many enormous Marans roosters from my other, usually smaller roosters a few too many times; sort of wish that they would stand up for themselves a bit more.....

Sounds like you have had some major bad luck, I keep an electric fence around my coop and main pens and so far I haven't had any problems. Before I put the fence up I did loose 1 GSL to a raccoon. Plus it ate all my fish out of my pond I had had the fish for over 15 years, that actually made me more mad than the chicken. What kind of LGD do you have, I don't like Pyrs much, but that is all I see around here.
I have not heard of the white wheatons, but I'm sure the breeders don't make it widely known.
I would love to get a bigger bator, I had a chance to get a Sportsman last year, but didn't think I would ever need one that big. I have all my eggs stuffed into a Hovabator 1588 and an Octogan 20. they are double stacked.

How's your hatch going? Our first batch of cross breed chicks is due to hatch the day after Valentines. I was surprised when I candled them at how few were developing; only 40 for sure out of 60 that I set. I really hope it is just that it's so early in the year yet...... Last year we had close to %100 hatches nearly every week, so I'm hoping that this first bunch is just a fluke.
Are you seeing good fertility?
Our guardian dogs are 3/4 Anatolian Shepherd and 1/4 GP. They took us some serious getting used to at first - a very different dog from any I've ever had before, but they are certainly good at guarding their critters! We absolutely adore them and I would not be able to manage my flock without them.

Also looking for a tom turkey. My hens are driving me crazy! Everytime I walk near them the squat down and are laying eggs.
I would like a standard bronze or narggensant tom.
The last Narrgensant I owned was a hen and she hatched out a clutch of chicks. well I had coyotes come in and she died defending her chicks. Lost all but 4 of the chicks. I heard them cheeping in the tall grass for her.

wow 12x60 I can not wait to see that baby LOL, how well will it be to clean, you peeked my interest now!! I will take lots of pictures, of the old and the new. I got a quote this morning, these folks are special. Im so glad to have found them!!!
