This year my experimental crop is sugar beets. I'm going to try to process them and see if it makes a decent substitute....maybe that would solve your sugar problem if you don't keep bees....

I think another important reason locavorism is taking hold is it offers people the ability to opt out of the Industrialized Food System. If you don't like the practices of factory farmed animals, pesticides, genetically engineered crops, cloning, irradation etc..... you don't have to support it. Many people view local eating as a way of voting with their dollars for systems they do want to see continue. Humane treatment for farm animals, heritage breed animals and crops, small family farms etc.... It really is a powerful form of activism, in it's own right.

Nice thread you got here....where to begin...

fluoride in water I agree with the OP that its a bunch of phooey, the old bait & switch like they showed in Erin Brockovich.....it's like there are a lot of known carcinogens in sun block & eye makeup (do you realize just how permeable your skin & eyes are?) the FDA & EPA really do earn there keep....

wheat really is different in the states they take most if not all of the gluten out, since I don't have a mill to grind I have given up baking, hate the results....

instead of suggesting a book, 2 documentaries I would suggest is: Enron & The Corporation, they will give you that extra push over the edge, you really do vote with your dollars - who are you voting for?
