Dan is the most unlikely worker in a meat processing facility, ever. He boxes the meat for us and it's always stack uniformly and tidy with the tape perfectly stretched across the tops of the boxes and clearing reading labels. I'll leave it at that.

That would be Scott. He goes by "Killer" when on the job. He answers the phone as "Killer". The two old people lurking about are his parents.

You hit on another reason why I use a procesor, other than I have to by law. They do a good job. I do an average job. And sometimes, I screw it all up and make the chicken look like it's been through a blender. So, leave it to the experts IMHO.

Also, Killer does a very quick job of it. From being 'poked' to going to sleep I would say is under 30 seconds for each bird. I don't know if you watched or not.

I am really a super intelligent goose. My name is Olive. That is my human in the picture.

carugoman--were you SF?

Dacjohns,
If you're referencing SF to Semper Fidelis... I was 8 years; US Army, 16 years; USAF. I was a combat engineer in the army, then I was "air commandos" in the air force; more specifically- RED HORSE + PRIME BEEF. Suffice it to say, I jumped out of many aircraft before the pilot decided it was time to land; constructed many bridges, buildings and runways AND blew up many bridges, buildings and runways. All this, along with an occasional chunk of lead whizzing by, until,as in my case- twice, those chunks hitting the mark? I mean, it's like, can"t a man just finish his work and go back to his rack in peace and quiet without being shot at? If you don't like the way I do my work come on over and tell me so I can shoot your sorry butt!

BTW I liked the coffee research link...I love technical! That's why my wife calls me "minutia man!"

Oh thanks-now I'm off to search for strawberries and rhubarb. I thought I'd get at least a week off of school before the processing began! I guess it is June-today it finally feels like it to me. I have been in Summer denial due to all of our cool weather.

This is the best thread ever OP-thanks! I never read 5 pages of posts to catch up on a thread-never.

Yes coffee info was cool.... I like to know how that stuff happens, where, why, etc. And I have never been to that milk link before. Really great stuff!

I liked Killer. He seemed like a matter-of-fact sort. Kind of like Olive. And I like tidy, too, interestingly enough

I was in summer denial until today. It was HOT out here! I have so many projects outside, I don't know when we'll have inside time for jam. BUT WE WILL FIND THE TIME! You just have to for jam. It is a small window of opportunity, so you just have to get in there and get it done. Then you have these lovely, tasty gems for the rest of the year to enjoy

Anyone want to share recipes on this thread, too? When I find our Strawberry-rhubarb recipe, I'll post it. It is FABULOUS, people.

Ok-you did it now. After I read your strawberry rhubarb post, I got all of my jars and lids out and took count of what I needed to buy- I drove to the jars and lids store-drove out to a farm that I thought might have some early organic strawberries-they did, just picked within 15 minutes-bought them-begged for rhubarb, but the guy was tired from picking berries and didn't want to go all the way out in the field to get it-decided I could do without for this batch-drove home-made jam. Yum. Thanks for the inspiration

Bans for putting recipes on a thread?

Why?

coffeegirl... I bet that jam is gonna taste amazing

Organic strawberries are special, you know? The robins usually get them all first. Post a pic of the end result! I love seeing all the little jars all lined up

Yes, but this thread is a mix of a bunch of stuff, mostly about eating locally, gardening, and preserving those harvests. Preservation recipes should be honored here, as well. My 2 cents.

Yep, I've been reading the thread from the start. Even harassing you to finish the book.

I'm glad you liked the coffee info. It seems doable in a greenhouse but you're looking at a long term project, not one season.
