More chicks than planned (photos)...

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens!! You ALWAYS end up with more than you planned. I wanted a small flock of b/n 10-15 hens. We're currently up to 45, with 20 eggs incubating. It's an addiction!!

We wanted 3-4. Currently have 10. I just bought a dozen hatching eggs. Almost bought more chicks yesterday. With each addition DH says will need to get rid of as well, but it never happens. Good thing we have a big coop.

I was just going to say that it was a RIR for sure. The one under the RIR looks like a New Hamphire Red. They are a little lighter than the RIR. No EE's in that bunch!!!

Just FYI...we do have a 12 step program for people that plan for x-amount and get way more....it goes like this..."Hi, my name is melissa and I started with 6 laying hens in Aug of 2008, I now have 103 with 35+ hatching eggs on their way".

We were like you. Last summer when I started thinking about chickens we wanted 3-4. We now have 18 with 19 eggs in the incubator and I'm bidding on 12+ more eggs (shh, don't tell my wife!!)

Nice looking chicks. I saw the same deal at Coastal down here and thought about going but decided against it.

We planned in the very beginning of our chicken conversations, that we were going to get 5 hens and a roo from a friend of ours that had too many. but things never went through, but in the meantime we ended up with 10 chicks in a brooder somehow lol then a day or two later, it grew to 16 chicks in the brooder. then the next weekend we have 4 hens out in the coop, and the new run we built for them was finished and in place. all in all we have 16 chicks, and 4 hens (already laying), and counting the days til we get more (that we won't have room for). It's going to be hard to see this big empty brooder just sitting in my office... lol. if you go by the 4 sq ft rule per chicken in our coop, we could house 40.....omg I hope we don't go that crazy lol

so cute!
and my dh and i planned for 4, ended up with 12 and i would like to try and get some EE's in my brooder as soon as my 6week olds are out in the coop. chicks are so addictive!

We started out wanting a few for eggs cuz we moved to the country. I should be honest and say I wanted a few hens for eggs. After my first batch were killed by a fox 9 wonderful ladies

I heard " what now we have to buy store bought eggs" so I was able to by 20 off craigs list. Which were suppose to all be 4 months old and all pullets. 5 got killed by whatever managed to get into a 5 inch hole in the top 7 were roo's and as of the first of the year I get 7-9 eggs out of the nine hens I have. Well then comes 5 EE's chicks after fight with BF cuz I wanted some so bad. Sometimes fights are good
wink.png
then went to the hardware store and thought well 2 more bo's to add to the brooder cuz whats two more and they make good moms, BF says why did you just get 2 so back to the store I go but no more BOs so I get BR. Well wanting Welsummers also I see an add on CL for a mix of BY chicks some Wellsummers for $2 each tell BF I am just going to look at them he says NO MORE CHICKS! I was honestly just going to look at them well bought 8 that day, searched on BYC to see how to sneak them into the brooder LOL. Well gave up and asked BF if I did his wash could I get 8 more he agrees
big_smile.png
we go to get them later and he says well we might as well take them all (she had 18 babies) I had to come clean and tell him I had already paid for 8 the day before. Well they are now pre teen. the EES,BOS and BRS are teens in their new BF built coop
smile.png
and I have 24 babies in the baby brooder 18 in the pre teen brooder and still want Marans, and more Wellsummers I think I ended up with 3. So YES chickens are very addicting. I have 51 chickens and started out wanting a few for eggs.
