Well I wouldnt do anything that would hurt them. You dont hold them up long and others have done it or I wouldnt have even thought of it. You hold them for a few seconds and if they stop kicking they are suppose to be pullets. The wing feathers, some hatcheries sex by that so I checked that as well. All this info is on BYC or I wouldnt have known even what things to even try to take a stab at. I am not going to vent check because I'm too afraid of hurting them. I watched a video on youtube about doing it and I just cant squeeze any chick like that. I know in the end I'll get what i get but just hoping sometimes wive's tales are correct.
I'm watching these chicks very carefully. When I arrived at the store three kids were reaching in grabbing ones and holding them, chasing them back and forth in the pen, they didnt seem to care much..they thought it was cute to see them running around. No parents around either. Now that they are home they seem extremely tuckered out and were panting under the heat lamp but wouldnt get up and move! I moved them closer to the water and showed them how to drink again in case they forgot. They all pooped out next to the waterer. Guess I'll watch them overnight tonight too, just to make sure. One has pasty butt, so watching that one anyway. Earlier they were peeping and "talking" to my other 2 week old chicks that are in the same room lol. Maybe that means at night the new ones will be quiet ones too!
