We are thinking about getting some cheap chicks from the feed store come fall to see if the disease is gone.

I would definitely necropsy one at least to know what's going on and how long it could live in the soil/area.

If its Marek's, it might be a good idea to keep a closed flock, OR only allowing vaccinated birds in.

If it's mareks, I've heard ducks don't get it.... I've I've a few people on here that have had mareks and begin to keep ducks after culling their flock

Are you going to send her in for a necropsy?

We have a half foot of sand under the coop as well as a half foot of mulch in the run. We we're going to clear it all out, let it sit for the summer, refill then decide whether we are going to get more chickens or not.
I sent a silkie in late last year, the results came back saying she died because of a vaulted skull, which is a silkie trait. She didn't just randomly die though because she died the same way the rest did.

Interesting, we might do that instead then. I would hate to put another flock through all of this again.

Unfortunately half the birds that died were vaccinated against Marek's.

My understanding of the Mareks vaccine is that it only protects chicks for the first few weeks. The vaccine is to turkey mareks not chicken.
