This is the best advice I've seen so far. The problem is, you called him. They know you have their dog. Now, you can get in legal trouble for not returning the dog to its rightful owner. Not that they give a flip, you know?

Of course they don't deserve to have her. You knew they wouldn't, but you did the right thing. I strongly suggest you leave her at the shelter like Jody said, with a note to call you if they don't come and get her. Hopefully, it is a 3 day shelter, and you can pick her up from them then. Of course there will be a fee, but don't you think it's worth it, rather than returning her to them?

Good luck!

Great advice! Follow it.

I would love to, just for the revenge, but I think I would feel disgusted with myself afterwards. I just want the dog to have a good life, not to make someone else pay for their deficits.

It's not about making them pay for their deficits. It's about responsibility. They are irresponsible. Some people have to be hit in the pocketbook to lean to do the right thing. The dog has been lost before, and they still don't do the right thing to take care of it. There have been no consequences. The next time it gets loose, it could get hit by a car, cause a traffic accident, kill chickens, get attacked by another dog, or a host of other unpleasant things. Let the pound handle it. If they love the dog, they will bail it out and, hopefully, learn a lesson. If they don't love the dog, you can adopt it.

This is just me but if I were you I would call him before the meeting and in mid conversation of scheduling s time and meeting place start screaming her name and say she got out and is running away again, then say gotta go. Later call the jerk back and say she got away again. I dont think he would say you stold her becuz he apparently doesnt care if she gets out and gets hit by a car or something.

If you dont want to do that, say you will buy her or take her.

I can see where you are coming from. I do know that they had to bail the dog out of the shelter before, so I am fairly certain that they would pay and it would not teach them a lesson. I will absolutely ask them if I can have her, though.

I would ask if you can keep her for sure, because it sounds like they don't really have a good fenced yard or anything to keep her in, but beyond that, it is their dog. I remember that you said that the dog was in good condition when you found her, and while it is horrible that he didn't bother to put up any signs or look for her in any way, she still belongs to him. Offer to take her, and I wouldn't hesitate to tell him that the next time she gets out and comes to your house, you won't be taking her to get scanned for a microchip, that he better come looking for her, and he sure as heck better know how long she's been gone!!

This is excellent advice and it's not about making them pay. This means they have to show they care enough about the dog to bail it out, which they don't I'm sure. Ask yourself how you will feel if you return the dog to them, she gets out again, and gets hit by a car and you pass her body on the road. Better the shelter than the morgue.

Yes, as much as I would love to tell him that she ran off, I think I will give her back if he won't give her to us.

Ironically, they have a very nice, fenced yard including electric fencing. She apparently escapes it regularly, although she did just fine in our fence while we were gone during the week.

If he doesn't have other dogs, that may make her want to roam out of loneliness- you have others for her to play with.

I'm not condoning this persons irresponsible behavior regarding the dog - I hope he does let you have the dog...
But Molly's owner has obviously been down this road before from what he said to you and I'll bet he's been offered by other
"finders" to take her off his hands.

Just for note, some high energy labs can be very hard to contain. They will dig out, jump out, tear out or/and run through to get out and run. Even if you kept her, she will most likely return to this behavior with out re-training.
