More Mealworms questions...

Finally nice to hear from someone who thinks they are easy to raise. When I first read the post on BYC it seemed so easy, then when I googled it the information was great but seemed like alot for little return. Do you sell yours or just use for your flock? Just curious. If you weren't in Canada I'd like to see your set up...but then going to Canada would sure be a nice trip...(hehehe)

I just use them for myself and at work to feed other critters. I have had reptiles in the past that ate them, and some cichlids ate them as a treat, and zebra finches and other little birds (hence them escaping in the house when the finches didn't eat them fast enough).
I will try to take a pic for you and post it. Have to find the camera....

I have med meal worms and the super worms growing. Not hard at all. Just a few tubs in the basement some wheat bran and carrots. I check on them once a week. When the beatles started to die I sifted them out and bam there was babies!

My 'substrate' is ground oatmeal and whole-grain rice that no one will eat

I put some of my birds' flock raiser in there as well, but not too much of that.

Another good treat for the chickies that is easy to raise are red wiggler worms. I got some to compost kitchen waste during the winter months. I did spend some money on the set up for ease of operation, but it could be easily constructed from recycled equipment. They eat up kitchen waste, reproduce rapidly, make the chickens smile and won't ever eat all your cereal

I know earthworms just crawl out on my gravel/dirt driveway when it rains. Look for very fertile areas with decaying wood, mulch, or vegetation. We have lots of earthworms under an old decaying piece of wood, only about 1/2 inch under the soil. As far as meal worms, not sure where to find those or the beetles.
