That is the sign of a happy, well fed quail that feels quite safe. When my quail do that I see it as a sign I am doing something right otherwise they would not be able to relax like that

LOL...and baby ducks do that too! Scared the stuffing out of me the first time!

Thank you everybody. Yes, my quail are a great source of cheap entertainment. Nothing better than going to sit in their pen and watching their antics. Have to make sure I bring treats other wise I get my toes pecked. Not even my chickens do that. As to the laying on the side thing, the first time I saw one of my chicks do that I was so upset at the thought that one of them passed and when I went to poke him to make sure he was dead he jumped up and ran to the other side of the incubator. I don't know who was more frightened at the time, him because I poked him or me that one of my chicks just came back from the dead and is now running strait for the edge of the incubator and in real danger of falling out and off the side of the counter.
