My Coop
My Coop
I was walking into the chicken run earlier and I heard a very strange noise coming from the coop. One of my EEs had just walked into a nestbox, and was arranging her straw, and my rooster was standing next to her, watching her, and making this really weird sound...very hard to explain. It was like a very quiet trilling noise. I've never heard it before. A couple minutes went by and she settled into her nest. The rooster then went into the nest box next to her and started arranging the straw like she did and then laid down like he was going to lay! He only stayed there a few minutes then left the coop. What was he doing? There was no aggression or problem involved; I'm just curious.

I have a couple of roos who do that.:lau
I'm not sure why either except maybe they're encouraging the girls..or, trying to show them a better way to do it..:gig

He is watching over her and showing her that this is a good place to lay an egg

Not too common, but 'normal' behavior.

Have seen them get in an empty nest,
new adult flock first day I brought them home,
and talktalktalk. He never got in a nest again.

Have seen them stand near a newly laying pullet and talk a little.

It is a nice thing to have a rooster that does that, it is leaps and bounds above tidbitting. He's showing her this is a nice safe place to hatch his chicks. Rooster here does it but he forgets to actually leave the box so the poor girls are kind of cramped.:)
