Mosquito (and other pesky insect) Rant

I use my muscovy ducks! They have really cut the mosquito population down around my house!
They don't get them all but they sure help!
I also hate bug bites and have a terrible reaction!
Some people swear by Skin So Soft from Avon, and they sell it by the truck load to the Military!!!
You can use it on your dogs too!
I would try the neem oil, another use for neem, is to keep insects off your garden plants, but I don't know how people apply it!!!

it is some good stuff!!

You should be able to buy it from your local Co-Op... we were at ours today buying some chicken and horse stuff, and there it was! on the shelf... it's made into horse fly spray and stuff too, as well as spray to... make your plants leaves shine LOL, just make sure it's almost all neem oil.

I have now learned that dragonflies eat way more mosquitos than bats do. I have mixed feelings about this, as mosquito control was the last strand of goodwill that I was clinging to regarding bats. Last year we had a, how should I describe it? Night of hell is pretty good. We had a colony of bats move into our attic, and while we were trying to rig up a way to "exclude" them from our home, my husband unwittingly changed an outdoor lightbulb. That night we caught over 40 little brown bats from 9pm to 4am, flying around our living room, by hand, ourselves. They were using the loose light socket as a bat door of some sort. And the next day I found out that we had to get rabies shots because they now reccomend them if you are in the VICINITY of bats, not only if you are bitten. Ugh. So, I guess that I am going to have to call the exterminator for the bats that have now moved into my garage

I want bats in my attic...only I don't have one...I LOVE BATS!!! I have a bat house on the fence in my back yard, but it is still uninhabited

The bats in the attic didnt bother me as much as it bothered my husband and my mother. It was after the invasion that I bacame a bit squemish about the little things. I am happy to say however, that we didnt harm a single one, and after we caught them all, I drove about 20 miles away and released them next to a lake. I think the worst thing about the bats, other than the rabies shots, was the bat bugs that came with the bats. After we got rid of the bats, we started noticing these strange bugs in the house, and I started waking up in the morning with huge welts on my arms that itched like crazy! Well, it turns out that bat bugs are almost identical to bed bugs, and when their normal hosts, bats, are absent, they will feed on humans instead. Ahhhhhh

!!

So, if I were you, I would stick to the bat houses

. We have one and are planning on putting up more...

We called the exterminator after I got online and was horrified by what I read about bed and bat bugs. There are actual support groups for people who have these beasties in their homes and cannot get rid of them. After reading about how one person in NY had to get rid of ALL their furniture and now sleeps on an air matress, I decided that I was not going to mess around with DE etc... We left town for the weekend and had them bomb the you-know-what out of the whole house. It worked thank goodness!! Bed bugs are

The only thing I don't miss about living in Alaska is the mosquitos. I am allergic to them and get huge welts anywhere I am bitten. My boys both have shirts that have a picture of a mosquito on it and underneath it reads: Alaska Air Force. LOL, they aren't called the Alaska state bird for nothing!
