Mosquito larve in the waterers

Thanks! I normally don't have to change the water at all, they run low every other day or so, that's when I dump the little that's left and clean. Though if they are in a dirt bath mode.... ugh!

Chickens aren't too bad to mess up the water, but turkeys...... Whew!!

Ugh, I feel your pain. We are in mosquito heaven here. I have to dump and refill 4 waterers every day. I would LOVE to have an auto system someday. For now, I consider it "bonding" with my chickens time. As Speckled Hen said, "would YOU drink it?" If not, change it.

I don't change mine everyday either. I wouldn't drink from a mud puddle but they do so i ain't that worried about new water every day...besides...they go through to fast to worry with...put some ducks in there...they make a big enough mess to spill everything!

I am SOOOO lucky where I live, no skeeters! But we do have ticks & chiggers. Good thing they don't larvae in the water!

I also use a tbsp. of bleach per gallon of water. It not only helps with mosquitoes but it aids in keeping algae growth nearly non-existant.

On the rain barrels, would adding goldfish not be kosher? I added them to my small garden ponds to help keep the mosquito larve down. They don't require a filter system. I'm talkin' goldfish from the bait 'n tackle store, not those fancy pet kinds.
